Bird tourism, Cali Colombia opens its doors, In a congress held by Birdfair 2018 where more than 600 tourists from abroad are expected.
Attracting birdwatchers and raising awareness about the care of fauna and flora, not only in the country but in the world, are some of the objectives of the Birdfair 2018, an event that for four years brings together in Colombia animal scientists and lovers of These animals with a variety of activities.
The bird tourism
Carlos Wagner, director of the event that will be held from February 16 to 18 in Cali, Colombia, explained that one of the purposes is to continue positioning this capital as the city of birds. “In fact, it has more than 560 species, a number superior to those that one can observe throughout Europe, which makes it very attractive because it becomes a world-class destination for tourists interested in bird watching.”
In fact, a study published in 2016 by Audobon (organization in the United States that is responsible for the protection of these species), noted that observers were willing to pay up to $ 350 per day in Colombia to make sightings of different types of birds. What shows that this activity can generate significant income.
According to Wagner, there are more than 1,930 types of birds in the country, where the city of Cali is the place with the greatest diversity. Also, the director stressed that “after the signing of the peace agreements two years ago and the possibility of touring different destinations in the country’s geography, there is a great opportunity to discover more species. In some years, we expect to have around 10,000 “, noted the director of the fair.
For the fourth year
On the background of the event, it is worth remembering that since 2014 the idea of offering the world an important space to approach the diversity offered by the territory arose. For this reason, Cali has been the favorite destination for lovers of these animals; to this they add chats and asesorias on the part of zootecnistas and experts in the subject. Some of the guest lecturers will be Englishman David Lindo, who is known as “The urban birder”.
The expert, who has also produced numerous articles for magazines and portals, will be accompanied by the Colombian biologist from Universidad del Valle, Carolina Murcia, who specializes in tropical ecology and conservation of these species.
In total, there will be 16 panelists from different countries who, during the three days of the event, will teach local assistants and tourists everything they need to know about birds; to this we must add information about the care of the ecosystem that, in the case of Cali, has a significant participation, not only in the country but in the world.
Expectations of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MinCit), are quite high, as they expect for this year’s fair about 14,000 attendees that will generate a total of US $ 9 million. In this way, the economy of the region will be reactivated and, in addition, income will be generated as a result of the activity.
According to Wagner, “we will have a total of twelve destinations enabled for this event, such as the San Antonio snow forest, the kilometer 18 area, the Anchicayá stop, Pance, Sonso lagoon, the vicinity of Lake Calima and sectors adjacent to the Farallones de Cali natural park.
In addition, there will be space for bird watching in the urban sector, where you can see about 250 species, “said the director of the event, who also highlighted the participation of the private sector to materialize this project for four years.
